Laser cladding technology since its inception, it has been widely used in industry and solved the problem of a large number of maintenance in engineering. However, laser cladding materials have always been an important factor restricting the application of laser cladding technology. At present, the main problems of laser cladding materials are: there are few special material systems for laser cladding, lack of serialized special powder materials, and lack of cladding material evaluation and application standards. In recent years, with the rapid development of technology and industry, the technical requirements for laser cladding will become higher and higher. Therefore, the future development direction of laser cladding mainly includes the following aspects:

1. Multi-disciplinary and cross-development.

At present, the laser cladding technology is mostly used in materials science and engineering. As a typical high-end manufacturing process technology, its application research combined with engineering objects is relatively weak. In the future, laser cladding is an interdisciplinary technology of materials science, optical engineering, and control engineering. Its research will expand from the material field to the manufacturing field, and the comprehensive development of various disciplines is required.

2. Systematized and integrated development.

Due to the technical bottleneck in laser cladding manufacturing, the size and shape accuracy of metal parts formed by cladding cannot meet the requirements of precision forming. Integrating laser cladding technology with robots, precision cutting, etc., to build a large research system, will promote the laser cladding technology and its industrialization.

3. Large area cladding and quality control.

Combining the development of high-power lasers and the design of laser optical systems, it solves the process problems of large-area cladding that cannot be overcome at this stage, and further improves the quality and manufacturing efficiency of the laser cladding layer.

4. Miniaturization and in-situ repair.

In view of more and more in-situ repair requirements, future lasers will develop in the direction of high power, miniaturization, and portable, and laser cladding technology will increasingly emphasize the application of in-situ repair technology.
